bitter

Oh how you sold your soul to see her one last time,
The early morning mist dancing around your car.
With the eastern sky awake behind you,
You drove straight on, into the dark.
Drinking your coffee, smoking that cigarette,
Your weary eyes searching for a hotel sign,
So you can rest your spinning head,
On a bed that's stained with strangers' dreams.
Fall asleep praying that tomorrow is the day.
See her one last time,
Before you both fade away.
Tell her that you miss her,
You try and find a way to say goodbye,
And turn around and walk away before she sees you begin to cry.
Find a place less lonesome, try your best to forget.
But the dreams will be the worst that you will ever get.
You'll wake up in the morning with her smile on your mind,
See that empty bed and hang your head and cry.
You sold your soul to see her that one last time,
A midnight walk that took you to her door,
A goodbye slipping like smoke through your fingers,
And you realize that you don't love her anymore.
Get into your car and smoke your last cigarette,
Keep driving west until you remember to forget.
Let the endless miles erase her from your heart,
And drive straight on, son, into the bitter dark.
